How to choose your stream after 10th std?

Passing the 10th standard brings lots of joys, celebrations, and dilemmas in a student’s life. It is the most important phase for students. After clearing the 10th standard in India, students need to choose their stream for higher education. The streams include Science, Commerce and Arts. As the name suggests, Science can open doors for high-end professions like Engineering, Doctor, Scientists, and more. The commerce deals with the finance and economics related professions and arts is for Social Studies, Law, Management studies and many more. It is often very difficult to make the right career choice in standard 10th. Students tend to choose streams without much evaluating suitable career options.

Proper guidance can skyrocket their career. At Sanskruti World School, we understand the problems a 10th pass student faces. Here are a few tips for students all set to start their Junior College journey soon.

Make an Informed Choice

As a student, you must understand what are the options available to you. Dig deeper to know more about all three streams – Science, Commerce, & Arts. Discover your interests, passion at this phase. It is often said most successful people convert their passion into a profession. Find out what can help to pursue your passion as your career. If you think you are weak in chemistry but good in Physics, take an aptitude test. It will gauge your knowledge and help you make a better stream choice.

Don’t Copy your Friends

Many times students choose a stream just because their friends are opting for it. Well, it is a big NO to make such decisions in the air. Your friends might have consulted their parents, know their future goals and then chosen the stream. If you follow them blindly, it can lead to a wrong decision. Every student is different and excels in various subjects. However, if your interests lie in the same stream as your friends, go ahead. You will be able to help each other better in academics.

Parents Guidance

Indian parents are either too involved in academics or not well informed. Parents need to have a balanced attitude towards their child’s career path. It is great if you can widen up your child’s perspective and help them choose a better stream. However, forcing them to pursue a stream to become typical Engineers, Doctors, CA, is not advisable. Do not set hard to achieve goals for your child at this stage. Talk to children, listen to their doubts, discover their interests and potentials.

Approach Career Counsellor/Teachers

A certified Career Counsellor can guide you the best after understanding your preferences and conducting an aptitude test. They are always informed and updated about career choices and future career avenues. Parents and students must actively participate in making an informed choice with the help of a counsellor. If you don’t

see any Counselling resource at the time of the decision, Teachers can guide you well. They have also been into the education profession for years. Also, they are aware of your child’s performance. They can surely advise the best stream for your child. Don’t hesitate; just share your doubts and career concerns freely.

Explore the Work Areas

Okay, this tip is suitable for students who have made their career choice and are determined about it. Suppose you have decided to pursue a career in Journalism. This is the time you must understand their working culture by reading and observations. If possible, ask your parents to arrange a one day visit to the News office. Discuss with the professionals over there. Find out the set of skills, courses to pursue after 12th. Getting exposure in advance can help you to make or change the decision. It will be a ground-level reality check for you!

Conclusion

Sky’s the only limit to learn, grow and prosper in life. However, there is always a phase in life when students need to narrow down their career choices.
